Shell OMALA S4 WE

Advanced synthetic gear oil

Former product name: Shell Tivela S

Shell Omala S4 WE is an advanced synthetic industrial gear oil for use in heavily loaded worm gears. The formulation based on a polyalkyl glycol (PAG) base and an excellent package of enriching additives provides excellent operating properties in difficult operating conditions, ensuring energy savings, reduced friction, extended drain intervals and high resistance to micro-pitting.

Application:

  • Closed industrial worm gears

Shell Omala S4 WE is recommended for worm gears operating under severe conditions, i.e. heavy loads, very low or high operating temperatures, large temperature fluctuations.

  • Systems with extended service intervals

Shell Omala S4 WE is recommended for equipment operating in severe conditions where oil changes are infrequent and long drain intervals are required and where accessibility is difficult (e.g. wind turbine gearboxes).

  • Other uses
Shell Omala S4 WE is recommended for many types of gears or other components where circulation or splash lubrication is present.
    • Shell Omala S4 WE is not recommended for the lubrication of aluminum or aluminum alloy gear components.
    • For heavily loaded gear or helical gears, the Shell Omala "G" range of products is recommended. Shell Spirax products must be used for hypoid gears used in vehicles.

Features and benefits

  • Long replacement intervals - lower maintenance costs
Shell Omala S4 WE is formulated to provide excellent antioxidant properties, thermal stability, long pot life and protection against high temperature oxidation products.
These properties help to keep the systems clean during long intervals of use.
Shell Omala S4 WE can significantly extend equipment life compared to conventional gear oils.
  • Excellent wear protection

Shell Omala S4 WE has excellent load carrying capacity, ensuring excellent component durability even under impact conditions. It also protects against
occurrence of the "micro-pitting" phenomenon. These properties give it a major advantage over mineral lubricants in terms of gear and bearing life.

  • Efficient operation of systems
Shell Omala S4 WE helps to increase the efficiency of gear systems by having a very low pour point which significantly reduces friction compared to mineral based products. This results in improved system lubrication at low temperature start-ups.
Bench tests have shown an increase in efficiency and performance of the systems up to 15% compared to standard mineral oil and 11% compared to PAO synthetic oils. The results have been confirmed by device manufacturers in many systems.

Specifications and approvals

  • DIN 51517-3 (CLP)
  • Approved by Bonfiglioli

Compatibility and mixability

  • Compatibility with seals and paints

It is recommended to use high quality epoxy paints as well as other polyalkylglycol resistant paints.

Shell Omala S4 WE is excellent for nitrile and Viton seals. However, Viton seals are preferred.

Replacement procedure

Shell Omala S4 WE contains a polyalkylene glycol (PAG) base which is incompatible with mineral oil and other synthetic oils. When replacing this type of oil with Omala S4 WE oil, a special replacement procedure should be used and remember about the lack of miscibility and other oil bases.

Prior to a full replacement, the transmission system should be flushed with a minimum amount of Shell Omala S4 WE oil by running the system at no load until warm, then the warm oil must be purged from the system.

Mineral oil seals should be removed and replaced with PAG compatible seals. Inspection of the system after replacement should take place after a few days
use to check the cleanliness of the oil and contamination of the system.

Shell Omala S4 WE is also immiscible with some other polyalkylene glycol fluids, care should be taken when topping up the oil system.

Work safety and environmental protection

The product does not pose a direct threat to health and safety during its correct use in accordance with its intended purpose and with personal hygiene.

Environmental Protection
Avoid skin contact. Use protective gloves. In case of skin contact, wash off the oil with soap and water.
Used oil should be handed over to an authorized and licensed waste disposal company.
Do not pour into the soil, surface waters or drains.
