How to use
Preparation of the substrate
The surfaces to be sealed should be clean, dry, stable and free from grease. Prior to applying the sealant, clean non-porous surfaces with DOWSIL™ R-40 Universal Cleaner and dry thoroughly with a clean, lint-free cloth. Porous materials such as concrete, brick, mortar, etc. should be mechanically cleaned of loose particles using a wire brush, abrasive pad or similar methods.
Masking Protection
Masking tape should be used on areas adjacent to joints to protect materials from contamination and to ensure a straight seal outline. Masking tape should be removed immediately after joint machining.
Underlay
Primers are not typically required, but may be recommended for certain surfaces to achieve maximum adhesion.
Finish Curing time
The applied sealant should be machined within 5 minutes of application to ensure good contact between the sealant and the material. Machined joints also give the joint a smooth, professional appearance.
Cleaning
Excess sealant in its uncured state can be removed from tools and non-porous surfaces using DOWSIL™ R-40 Universal Cleaner. If sealant is improperly applied to porous material, allow it to cure and then remove it by peeling, cutting away, or other mechanical means. Avoid damaging plastic or coated surfaces.
Connector design
The width of the sealant joint should take into account the possibility of sealant movement. When forming a joint using DOWSIL™ 813C Construction and Concrete Silicone Sealant, the minimum width should be 6 mm. For joints 6-12 mm wide, a seal depth of 6 mm is required. For joints greater than 12 mm wide, a 2:1 ratio between width and depth is recommended. If a fillet joint is required, it is recommended that a minimum of 6 mm of sealant is applied to each surface. For joints greater than 25 mm wide or greater than 15 mm deep, contact your local Technical Office.
