Durability and Storage
When stored in a cool, dry place at temperatures below 30°C (86°F) in the original unopened packaging, the shelf life of the mirror adhesive is
DOWSIL™ 817 is 12 months from the date of production.
How to use
Preparation of the substrate
The surfaces to be sealed should be clean, dry, stable and free from grease, dust and other contaminants that may affect adhesion. All
surfaces should be cleaned and degreased using a clean, oil and lint free cloth soaked in an appropriate solvent such as DOWSIL™ R-40 Universal Solvent before applying the sealant. Check that the mirror is evenly coated, protected by the paint and free from scratches.
Note: Ensure adequate ventilation when using any sealant. Avoid heat, sparks and open flames.
Application method
The sealant is ready to use. Apply 10 mm wide vertical strips to the back of the mirror at 100 mm intervals. Then press the mirror onto the surface, maintaining a constant bead thickness of 2 mm to ensure optimal curing and bonding.
Support the mirror for at least 24 hours with adhesive tape. This will ensure
good contact and minimal movement. Air must be allowed to circulate freely around the mirror edge to allow the sealant to cure.
Limitations
Do not use DOWSIL™ 817 Mirror Adhesive on bituminous materials, materials containing natural rubber, chloroprene or ethylene propylene rubber, or on building materials that may bleed oil, plasticizers or solvents. Do not use DOWSIL™ 817 Mirror Adhesive in a confined space because the sealant will cure when exposed to atmospheric moisture. DOWSIL™ 817 Mirror Adhesive should not be used on joints that are immersed or subject to mechanical or abrasive wear. When using with safety mirrors (single-pane mirrors with a plastic film on the back to prevent the glass from splintering if broken), first test the adhesion of DOWSIL™ 817 Mirror Adhesive to the plastic film. This product is not suitable for food contact applications. DOWSIL™ 817 Mirror Adhesive is not recommended for structural glazing or insulating glazing.
